they have, i looked through my books that i have and if you just kind of flip through the first book, and look at joe and then look in the middle of the book at him, and then the end of the book at him, he changes a lot yehuda not so much. He never changes. lol.
My commute to work is downhill, but sometimes the headwind makes it feel like I’m still pushing uphill. If I’m lucky though, wind patterns stay the same all day, and I get a nice boost back up the hill to get home
I bike out toward the SF Bay in the mornings when the wind blows inland and then away from the Bay in the evenings when the wind goes the other way! Head winds both ways!
Have you ever been knocked off your bike by a side wind? I was commuting on a bridge over the expressway, and it almost knocked me off the bike, over the railing!!!
I (or I should say we) were knocked off our tandem by a side wind at a traffic light, just as it went green in that vulnerable moment when all four feet are off the ground but you’re not going very fast). Luckily the drivers of the cars behind us were patient (probably laughing their heads off) as we untangled ourselves and got back on.
I remember visiting my girlfriend in Newcastle-on-Tyne on Xmas around 1972-3 . . . I was staying at a friend’s house and decided to go get cards and things on the Saturday. Headwind into town, downhill. I actually was blown into a wheelie as I came across the top of the hill before starting the descent and it was hard work getting there. Overtaking a 30mph car uphill without pedalling on the way back was something I won’t forget, now you have awakened the memory for me. Thanks Martin – Happy New Year…

I already ordered my copy of Vol 5 a few days ago when I realised that I hadn’t already done so. At least I think I did – terrible memory. Wait and see.
You should still be excited Sylvia – this proves that Rick is reading the comments and doing something, at least, to alleviate our losses.
Now, if only he would wipe clean the comments each day before posting, we would have a blank sheet to meet on. The old comments have been fairly lengthy on occasion and some of us (me) were still learning to communicate again after my heart attack had wiped my memory clean!
In truth, I am grateful that Rick is keeping the strip going. Renewing the strip weekly, maybe, instead of daily stretches it out a long way before we get to the end of (4-years?) of the strips so far.
It is only a little more trouble to scroll down to the end to communicate with new comments. All comments are dated anyway so there is no problem identifying new from old…

I didn’t have a terrible headwind this morning — nothing nearly as bad as Yehuda is dealing with here, but it was worse than I expected. The weather conditions listed on the Weather Channel said NE winds at 2 mph, but the flags I saw along my ride route told a different story. At 35 degrees in the morning, though, it was one of the warmer days of the last several weeks. Shorts only – left the base layer tights at home, and didn’t regret my choice.
I just stopped in today to tell you I just received book 5, thanks for the speedy shipping! What a pleasant surprise to find you firing up the reruns, I hope you are enjoying your sabbatical!
Don’t be too sad – the extras were a few ‘Kickstand Comics’, a bumper (saddle?) sticker and a tie-on Kickstand cyclery ticket. I do not feel robbed I am wondering where to fix the sticker. Ideas?
nb: through most of my 30+ years of marriage, my Wife and I have stuck stickers on our 3-drawer filing cabinet. If I stick any more on they would hold the drawer/s closed
I did get the tie on ticket and I received a patch in a previous order, that was pretty awesome! My mom had a banjo case just like that, except the stickers were literally holding it together.
Having trouble getting around these days… I’ve said it for a long time… Walking is more dangerous than riding a bike. I’ve also been known for saying that stairs are my nemesis. Last Wednesday, I was proved right on both counts. I’ve since been told my fibula isn’t broken, but there’s a real chance of some serious soft tissue damage.

I am sorry to hear about your injury. IMHO soft-tissue damage of that kind can cause discomfort for the rest of your life while bones just, well, heal…
In cold weather, like now, and especially cold and wet weather, my left knee causes some discomfort and some times ‘locks’. Going down stairs means I have to only bend the right knee. Keeping the left straight and pushing it forward to the next step while the right knee lowers me down. Which is slower and doubles the stress on the right knee (causing it to fail sooner?)
So I sympathise and I hope you will heal up without any negative after effects. Maybe see a specialist that can suggest some medical solution?
Went to the Ortho Doctor. He checked things out pretty carefully, and he (happily for me) doesn’t thing that I tore anything. Just a nasty bone bruise for each of my knees. A month or so and I should be back to about 100%.

Bill, the story you linked to was actually my inspiration for my little. Sadly, I didn’t have time to do a 20+ mile ride like that guy, so I did the best I could. My wife liked it, so for Valentine’s Day that’s all that really matters, right?

What’s worse is yesterday, my wide and I played switcheroo with the baby so she could go out in the evening, so she came by my office at the end of the day in the car, and I drive home with son and bike in car. IOW, suffered the pain of the headwind, but didn’t get to reap the rewards of the tailwind. At least tonight I get to ride home with the wind at my back!
I got hit by another car tonight (that’s #13 in total). Fortunately, this time it happened at a VERY slow speed, and I almost got clear. Bike looks to be ok, I’m unhurt, but I was VERY pissed.
I was approaching a street from the driveway of a local gas station (and short cut to Subway) when a car turned the blind corner, overshot her lane, and headed straight for me. It was night, I had my lights, and when I shone my lights where the driver’s eyes should have been, I only saw the left shoulder of the driver as she was bent down into the passenger side foot well. When she slowed to make the turn, her groceries hit the floor, and she was trying to stop them from dumping out.
I made a sharp turn to my left and yelled, just as she came up, and started to accelerate. She grazed my rear wheel and rack just as I was trying to jump clear. She stopped and stayed. Had I been a motorist in a car, it would have been a head on collision, had I not yelled, she may have ran into the building that was behind me.
I got her name, her cell number (verified by a call while she was there), got the license number. She was shaken up, but not nearly the twitching mess I was. No injury, no noticeable damage, there’s no way the cops would have had anything to do.
Motorists, please remember this…

It is an example of a driver who has never taken the time to train themselves to see the act of actually DRIVING (or RIDING!) is an occupation that take every bit of your concentration. There is no room for other tasks at the same time. Which is why child seats are available so you don’t need to be distracted by unruly youngsters as they are tethered and safe instead of bouncing around the cabin, causing distraction and being hurt in a crash.
In this case I suppose, She SHOULD of simply stopped to put the shopping safe. INHO shopping should be safely and completely tethered anyway so that sort of thing never happens. I put mine in the ‘boot’ of the car, with stuff holding it in place, like the heavy blanket I keep in there.
A workmate once told me of the time he witnessed a crash and his blanket kept the driver warm until help arrived. We used the blankets to protect the granite work surfaces of the machines we serviced. After leaving the job I still had (my own) blanket and it is always in there. It is a cushion and restraint for goods and has been useful for numerous tasks over the years. It is also helpful when you have a puncture to put down to protect your clothes etc as a work surface. It washes out nicely after use. I used to use a cardboard sheet but that quickly got ‘ratty’ and needed replacement after such a job…
It is common to stand at the side of the road while waiting for help if you break down on the freeway/motorway. Standing well away from the road! I have seen many videos of standing cars, even on the hard shoulder, being hit by negligent or homicidal drivers. My rear RHS wheel got a blow-out at 70mph on morning in lane 3. I was able to stop safely and parked as close to the edge of the tarmac as possible while changing the wheel. An Italian truck was seen to veer towards me and missed my car by inches. If I had stayed in place, changing the wheel, I would have been killed! I kept an eye on approaching traffic and moved out of the way if any vehicle was hugging the lane-edge. Good job too.
btw: In that incident, the blow-out resulted in the tyre-tread flailing around. It completely destroyed the plastic petrol delivery tube, I could look through the filler nozzle and see daylight. Looking under the wheel arch I was looking down on the top of the fuel in the tank! I was lucky there was no spark… I was about a mile from a service station and I waited there for help from the recovery people. Who plugged the hole in the tank with a cloth and advised me to drive home gently. The option was to pump/drain the fuel from the (recently filled!) tank before hauling it onto a recovery truck. I would have lost a day’s work. By phoning the office, I was able to return there and change car and lost only a few hours instead.
Sorry – ‘INHO’ above s/b ‘IMHO’ – If I could have deleted the post and re-posted after the correction it there would have been no need to post this correction…
I guess it’s really not going to start up again. I don’t know how many months longer I’ll leave it in my bookmark folder. I open all the “comics” in tabs at once, so this page continues to show every morning till I give up entire and throw away the link.
Too bad. At least I got all the books, a piece of the burnt kickstand (actually some remains from the cartoonists last reno job), a badge to put on my Walz green wool yehuda cap, and the artist’s sig. Not lucrative, but a nice package of collectibles for a time gone by. See ya, guys.

What you say has some merit Steve but this comment stream is already getting unwieldy. A fresh comment stream now and again would be nice. A fresh stream daily automatically tells us if any new comments have been made.
In a little brainstorm, I was just thinking we could accomplish the same sort of forum/community aspect and a fresh daily comic on our own, in the form of a Google Group, so I took the initial steps of creating one.
It is called “Friends of Yehuda Moon.” Each day, a link to the image file on this site for the next comic in the series can be posted as the beginning of a new thread. That way, everyone who likes to hang around here still and chat (and others, too, of course) who are interested in re-reading Yehuda and commenting daily and continuing the friendly banter we’ve grown accustomed to here could do so in this way.
I’ve set it up to be completely open so that anyone can read and post. Hopefully, we’ll be able to police ourselves and won’t be the victims of spamming, which could mean we’d need moderators, etc., something I can’t commit to rimewise right now since I’m working full-time, going to grad school almost full time, and helping to raise my 10-month-old son all at once. If others are interested, chime in over on the Google Group and we can see how it goes…?
@Tencon: Feel free to jump over to the Google Group. I’ve been posting a strip daily for rereading and comment. I was inspired to do so in large part by your desire to reread the strip from the beginning and have a place to still chat and be friends, which was something I was also interested in. Traffic’s been very light over there. Your contributions would help a lot…

It was a nice trip and the weather is terrific for cycling!
I saw a chap on a road bike with dropped bars that was the same colour as our Trandem! He was no slouch either – Like me when I was young, he was ‘out of the blocks’ and across the road before the cars really got going when the traffic lights went green… Uphill too! Respect.

31mph headwind this morning. I chickened out and drove in.
Although if it had held up for the return commute, that would’ve been interesting.
I’ve commuted in those kinds of conditions, both headwind and tailwind. The tailwind is significantly more enjoyable.

I still poke my nose in every morning. I’m not sure it would be beneficial to run through the strips again. Here on the first one is a good place for new visitors to start. And it is easy to scroll down here to see if anyone’s posted anything new.

What you say has some merit Steve but this comment stream is already getting unwieldy. A fresh comment stream now and again would be nice. A fresh stream daily automatically tells us if any new comments have been made.
In a little brainstorm, I was just thinking we could accomplish the same sort of forum/community aspect and a fresh daily comic on our own, in the form of a Google Group, so I took the initial steps of creating one.
It is called “Friends of Yehuda Moon.” Each day, a link to the image file on this site for the next comic in the series can be posted as the beginning of a new thread. That way, everyone who likes to hang around here still and chat (and others, too, of course) who are interested in re-reading Yehuda and commenting daily and continuing the friendly banter we’ve grown accustomed to here could do so in this way.
I’ve set it up to be completely open so that anyone can read and post. Hopefully, we’ll be able to police ourselves and won’t be the victims of spamming, which could mean we’d need moderators, etc., something I can’t commit to rimewise right now since I’m working full-time, going to grad school almost full time, and helping to raise my 10-month-old son all at once. If others are interested, chime in over on the Google Group and we can see how it goes…?

I was inspired to do so in large part by your desire to reread the strip from the beginning and have a place to still chat and be friends, which was something I was also interested in. Traffic’s been very light over there. Your contributions would help a lot…

I took my Wife to Kenilworth so she can help a friend learn the Ukulele.
It was a nice trip and the weather is terrific for cycling!
I saw a chap on a road bike with dropped bars that was the same colour as our Trandem! He was no slouch either – Like me when I was young, he was ‘out of the blocks’ and across the road before the cars really got going when the traffic lights went green… Uphill too! Respect.
