Telling how to steer is better than assuming the learner will ‘Know How’
My Wife was out on a bike I had got for her and doing well until she started to ‘Thin’ about steering right. without the knowledge she tried to steer right and fell over when she was forced to lean left!
The counter intuitive trick of steering left to make the bike lean right so you can GO right is difficult to understand.
On our tricycle Tandem it was really hard re-learning how to steer!
I first went in circles the wrong way until, at low speed off-road, I taught my muscle memory to steer right to go right…
You don’t steer left to make the bike lean right. Who taught you that? You steer a bike by turning the handlebars slightly in the direction you want to turn, then lean as much as necessary to turn as sharply as you want. Leaning is easy — you just start to “fall-over” but you let centrifugal force counterbalance you. “Countersteering” is merely applying pressure to the handlebars to prevent the front wheel from pivoting too far and flipping around and dumping you on your ass.
Counter steering!
