And HAVE to get in front of my Velomobile, even if that means cutting me up.
It usually means I pass them while they wait on red then stop just in front of them waiting for green. I don’t actually block them – the move helps me as I get green just as I get there more often than not, so I don’t need to stop. 55+ years of cycling means I have a ‘no stopping’ instinct.
Even though I won’t be trying to find a place to ‘trackstand’ or put a foot down.
I hate the ones who push past then cut in right to the edge of the road stopping me from filtering by on the inside. I have to overtake them. Some bus drivers get the idea and slow down to follow me. Those are possibly the ones who pushed by and were passed before and they ‘get it’. When in front of buses, if I get a reasonable lead I can stay in front of them all the way unless a hill slows me down…
In England, a lot of traffic light crossings have a refuge for cyclists,
A green line 2-3 feet from the side will then turn to follow the white ‘stop’ line and continue round providing a box for cyclists to wait in. Many motorists see this as an extension of their stopping place but most honour it. Thus there is just enough room for my Mango to squeeze by to wait in the box. IF no motorist parks in the refuge that is!
Riding fixed gear has improved my driving. Learning to time the lights with a bike translates over to timing lights with a car. On a common route I drive, I don’t have to stop at 8 lights in 6 miles.
P.S. Have a great break guys, see you in the future.
It used to be that traffic lights were timed or synced to the flow of traffic MOVING AT THE POSTED SPEED LIMIT — and for all I know, it may still be that way in many areas. But so long as motorists insist on driving at least 5 – 10 mph over the posted limit, they are going to be ‘out of sync’ with the lights and will find themselves stopping at each and every one of them.
Here in San Francisco there are a few streets (Folsom and Valencia are two I know of) where the signals are timed for 13mph specifically so that bicyclists never need to stop. I always laugh riding down those streets, because I pass the same cars stopped at every single light… only to be passed by them seconds later, as they speed off to wait in line at the next light.
There are even signs about the 13mph light timing, but they’re small and off to the side so the motorists never see them.
Hi Stefan 0166 – You think it is bad up high on an upright bike? Try how bad it is 80Cm/30£ or so from the floor!
If a big diesel vehicle is nearby Velonauts can actually taste the fumes and we get greasy smudges from the oily particulate coughed out by these noisesome things. 🙁
Hi Tencon, I just have a old Radius “Peer Gynt” which of course is not that low.
And, regulations over here force real big Diesel to leave the Air even better than they sucked in.
Plus, for big Diesel this works, not like the small ones from Volkswagen and so on.
So; Yes I think riding really low would force me even more to fight for my place in front instead behind the cars row.
As long as nobody has to say something…
Yes.
Thuderstorm announced, will make my way home early. I would not like to be in the forest when it is over me 😉
I got to engage with a member of the pedestrian public! I was riding to work in the morning (just before dawn and it is winter in Oz where I am) and there were two young ‘ladies’ walking toward me both dressed up as Eskimos. One of them, seeing me in my shorts and shirt only, screams out at me “Put on a jumper you freak!”. 🙂
Four and a half years later, I still miss Kickstand Comics. I bought all the books and the two ebooks of 5&6 because I couldn’t find hard copies. The best comic about cycling by far, and just one of my favorite comics all around.
Cyclists are pioneers in a land of toxic fume spewing multi ton steel beasts. They are controlled by anonymous incredibly unhealthy angry beings with MAGA hats pulled down low on the brow. I got slowly buzzed by a “trailblazer LOL” redneck this morning and thought…hmmm a good outlet would be publishing a comic about these destructive creatures. I also had another thought….we cyclists will outlive these creatures by decades. Too bad they reproduce. Well atleast I have made two more future velo-warriors.
I look every day, hoping Rick and Brian will have been struck by the muses. In the meantime, the “Random” is my go-to click: re-runs being better than nothing at all…
That is a really good tip particularly to those new
to the blogosphere. Brief but very precise information…
Thank you for sharing this one. A must read post!
Probably nothing new for many of you, but I have just recently come across a man named Jeff Jones. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMkQ7z9Gi7c Doesn´t he remind you of someone? 🙂
Had just been re-reading Yehuda’s adventures.
Rick and Brian had promissed to fix all the loose ends of sub-stories – but there still are some, e.g.:
– Concilman and his wife had dissappeared after thei car was found; Pilot is talking again and he knows something about them. What did he do to them? I do hope no vigilante justice.
– Has Fred found peace or is he still haunting?
– What happened to Nanny State’s ‘law’?
And more…
I only have Vol 4 of the printed edition. There are included 6 pages of short stories, that don’t appear online. Is it possible, to put those online?
Note to the authors: Could we get an annual strip for the Ride of Silence? Something along the lines of “We’re not dead yet, but we mourn those who are.”
Its such a pity that this strip never resumed. I totally understand that the authors had lives sway from it, but even so… I’ve been through the whole thing here on the internet several times, and I’ve been able to get hold of two volumes in print.
Hello Rich & Brian,
it’s a pity you stopped the comics before the hype of electrified ‘bikes’ started. Would be interesting, how the Kickstanders react.
My guess:
Yehuda hates them
Joe would never ride one, but thinks: they are good business
Thistle is interested in their techniqe, but won’t ride one
Sprocket hates them (ALARM! she’s the same mind as Yehuda)
The other Shakers are interested in that technique.
Fred thinks ebikes are NO bikes, but motorcycles – and so not his business
Hello Rick and Brian,
as I mentioned above: I only got Vol 4 of the printed edition. Postage from U$A to Europa is quite expesive in comparison to the price. And there is only Vol 5 & 6 left over… So: would you please offer a version in .pdf (suitable for all ebook-readers! and not only Amazon). Of course I’llpay for them – not the full price of the printed edition, but let’s say 50 %.
Thanks
p.s. again: please excuse my poor English (the comics had been a reason for some training)
I just finished slowly reading Vol. 1-6 over the past year as bedtime reading with my daughter. We would love to see more! Biking has changed a lot since 2016 with ebikes lowering the bar for entry into bike commuting and riding with kids/cargo. I personally think Yehuda would be a big fan of them, even if he wouldn’t use one himself. There’s also been huge growth in bike infrastructure (at least here in Minneapolis) that I think would make Yehuda happy–though Joe might not be thrilled about some of our sidewalk level protected bike lanes with protected intersections 🙂
I really hope to see more of Yehuda Moon in the future! The stories and characters are all so great and relatable. Thanks for everything!
Amen, brother!
Obviously they need to justify all the horsepower they’ve bought.

As long, as cars have the exhaust pipe at the rear end, I prefer to wait in front.

Driving is pure stress! All the bikes in the way! So drivers enjoy the break at the traffic light.
Hanging back would be admitting something…

We have regulations as of maximum speeds everywhere. Maximum speeds, yes, but not how fast one can get there 😀
@Alessandro : exactly – the posted speed is a LIMIT not an objective!
Nor a minimum…
It always feels good when I catch them at the next light, though!

I couldn’t count how many times I have had that thought!
So, has the strip gone into coma mode?
No, Jim.
The Author(s) are taking a well-earned rest.
We are looking forward to the hoped-for return with anticipation 🙂
Why do they need a rest?
Just try creating new ideas every day while holding down a paying job…
Rick and Brian have my lasting admiration for their output.
So the strip has gone into ‘comma’ mode…
As long as nobody has to say something…
Yes.

Good one, Warren – the actions of us bike riders are often hard for others to understand.
I miss reading about Yehuda, Joe, and the rest … Maybe we should all relate bicycling tales to them so they’ll have more ideas for the cartoon?
I second that motion!

Me too.
May I please have more Yehuda?
Me too please!
anxiety
We’re ready!
I would relate my cycling horror story but 1) it’s too close to Yehuda’s, and 2) it’s almost old enough to vote.
I call this phenomenon “hurry up and wait.”
Yes, Please may we have more! I was also wondering if Volume 2,3 and 4 would ever be available in a digital format?
Thank you for your time!
Surely it’s about time for another run?
Well, what did Pilot do to the council blokey? Do finish the story!
I look every day, hoping Rick and Brian will have been struck by the muses. In the meantime, the “Random” is my go-to click: re-runs being better than nothing at all…
I miss the daily feed too. Is it ever coming back, Rick?
I miss Kickstand 🙁

24 March – two-year hiatus anniversary. Will Yehuda ever return with new comics?
Probably nothing new for many of you, but I have just recently come across a man named Jeff Jones. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMkQ7z9Gi7c Doesn´t he remind you of someone? 🙂
Rick, please bring this strip back. I and others miss it in our daily lives.
More Kickstand please!!
We miss you, Yehuda!
I just finished a reading binge. This is worse than getting a flat at the top of a sweet hill.
Still missing this…
I miss Yehuda!
Bring back Yehuda!!!
Waiting for Yehuda, but now the SPAM bots are starting to rot this site…
March 24rg, 2020. Another year has gone by. We need Yehuda to come (ride?) back. Bring more back, Rick. We’ll even subscribe again!
Wow the site has been down for years (well at least for new material) and people are still spamming you! Yet we still hope.
So who’s going to crack first with a new cartoon. Rick and Brian? Or Bill Watterson.
Thank you, we enjoyed reading your comic strip!
I’m still waiting to find out what happened to Sweetroll’s truck.
Here is one that came back after a year off.

Another year has passed since Yehuda Moon hit the brakes and stopped. Even my random selection on-line is getting memorized.
Bring back Yehuda and the rest of the gang!
sigh
I’m still checking in of RoS day, but nothing new yet.
Just hoping….
We miss you!
This story made me think about Yehuda:
https://clevelandmagazine.com/in-the-cle/news/articles/ohio-city-bike-shop-owner-speaks-out-after-hit-and-run
Still checking every now and then. I would love to hear Yehuda waffle about E-Bikes…

Thanks for keeping the site live – it’s helped give me the motivation to start commuting to work by bike!
Rainy day here in Wyoming. Don’t get many of them so it seems like a good day to go back and read the collection of Yehuda. Life is good
the website’s copyright has been updated but no new comics 😭

The escaped councilman and his wife need to complete their story arc! I miss Yehuda too. 🥺
