I have never realized how many bugs (and flies etc.) get killed by traffic… until I started riding a motorcycle. One gets a certain idea while cleaning all those tiny dead bodies from the machine, clothes or the helmet.
On a motorcycle I was passing a zoo in the 1970s
The screen and my visor blacked out when the thick mass of flies were hit at 60mph!
It only lasted an instant – the flies happened because the road skirted the ‘toilet’ zone of the zoo 🙂
I finished the ride with my visor lifted, peering over the top of the screen.
I can only imagine the fate of my friends without screens!
It took hours to clean the machine…
I have never been so afflicted on a bike but have encountered thick clouds of midges etc
Recent figures indicate that there are more than 200 million insects for each human on the planet!  And a recent article in The New York Times claimed that the world holds 300 pounds of insects for every pound of humans.
Now granted, not all of these can fly.  But there’s enough that do at some point or another in their life cycle.
