Sounds like a good idea to me.
1. Customer gets the joy of building his own bike
2. Customer learns a lot about ‘wrenching’
3. Customer can alter his design during the build to get a unified finished item
4. Any difficulties that come up have a seasoned mechanic there to help sort it out
5. Customer has nobody to blame if the finished item is ‘wrong’ – except themselves
However, the experienced bicycle mechanic supervising the build can give advice and teach techniques along the way
The fun never ends :-)
To me building a bike is great therapy; then you get to ride your handy work! I thoroughly enjoy the parts selection process, ordering the parts, waiting for them to trickle in, then the build process and finally the test ride. I have enough project bikes that I can keep myself out of bars and off of street corners for the next decade!
In my house there is one bike that I didn’t build, my partner and I have a mtb and a road bike each.
I miss building bikes but can’t justify having as many as I once did as I no longer commute on one.
I have had the opposite reaction from a shop recently, I wanted to build a custom bike myself and wanted to buy a frame from them. However they kept insisting they could just build a custom bike up for me around the frame I liked.
It was really kind of insulting that they thought I could not build a bike up myself.
Try this in germany, and the shop owner will face problems with the authorities and his insurance 😉
That is sad. Surely there is a legal way around this?

Chevy does this with Corvettes. They have a program where buyers can participate in the building of the engine.
that makes me want a ‘vette
Shame I’m in the UK and have a two wheels only policy
Perhaps Triumph will introduce the same idea
Ha, I guess every bike purchaser participates in the design of the engine!
There ya go!
