I know this sounds heartless, but rather than do a male version of “Stand By Your Man”, please let the councilman throw her under the bus.
And by this I mean be supportive, of course, but if it turns out she was driving, don’t try to shield her or otherwise use whatever influence he might have to get this kicked under the rug. A man was killed — no doubt unintentionally, and I can kinda accept that — but someone then drove away and kept quiet about it. And that is totally unacceptable, for any reason.
Oooooo — I just had a thought. Yehuda tells Joe that “detectives checked some calendars” and that it appears the councilman was “out of town at the time the day you were hit”. So try this on for size….
The councilman *WAS* supposed to be out of the city that day, but it was all a ruse and he had returned for a little Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinski-type shenanigans at the No-Tell Motel on the outskirts of town. He got into the accident but because he wasn’t supposed to be in town he couldn’t take the chance of being found out so he took off, trusting his already-in-place out-of-town alibi to hold up if any questions arose.
“out of town”? There was a murder locally where the perp was initially proven to be out of town. It took 20 years but they finally charged the guy and he later confessed. That was before digital records were so common.
Or was the car on loan to someone else?

Almost the same thing played out here in Minneapolis. Amy Senser.
