I’ve completed Trondheim–Oslo (540 km) with Shimano cleats-fitted cycle sandals. Which also look neat enough to wear around people. Plus you don’t walk like a penguin (cause the cleats are recessed). 🙂
I once walked my friend’s dog in spandex and shimano road shoes. Sure it looks funny to an outsider, but the only sin I committed was being in spandex and more than 10 feet from my bike..

Wish I had bought and stored a whole batch of the Avocet touring shoe back in the 1980s.
I bike in my flip flops, in the warm months at least. (And I’d be barefoot if I could) 🙂
