It’s true that it’s disconcerting when 1 in 100 drivers doesn’t roar past dangerously close in a narrow bit. It’s not so bad if they back off a bit, but most are too clueless to do that.
Commuting in to my job this morning I reached the point in the road where I can make a left and get on to a bike path for a nice stretch of car-free riding. I signal left, and then proceed to make the left hand turn… the car behind me got frustrated with this momentary delay and tried to pass ON THE LEFT. Some skidding of car and bike ensued, some cursing and gesturing (mine) and the unmoved driver then proceeded along her way, cell phone pressed to ear.
This is why I point directly where I’m going. No subtle signs. And NEVER assume drivers understand anything. I do like the reminder in this strip that some drivers do in fact wish bikes well.
No win situation because while the car driver is doing the right thing his not passing to the point everyone else is grumbling puts the cyclist more at risk because of action some other driver may take against the cyclist.
Yehuda, bro, wave them the hell on man! You grumbling too isn’t the solution if you want them to pass. Either signal the driver or pull over for a minute and ride in peace again.

I hate it when I signal for a left turn and the driver behind me thinks I’m waving him by.
I point instead of holding my palm open. Pointing is less ambiguous.

Nothing irritates me more than a driver who won’t pass – even when its clearly safe to do so!
It’s a double yellow, Yehuda!
Pull off to the right for 5 seconds.
