Yehuda Moon works at the Kickstand Cyclery, lives on his bicycle and dreams of a day when everyone does likewise.
The comic strip is about two guys who run a bike shop and the challenges they face in the store and on the road. Yehuda‘s the utilitarian advocate; Joe‘s the go-fast pragmatist. Thistle Gin, a wrench and biking mom, rounds them out.

I love the 700c Halo!
Yes, I grew my beard, bevore I started to ride a ‘bent
I don’t get the hint “700c” at Joe’s halo …
700C = Tire size for classic racing bikes.
Uh, kinda. 700C was, classically (eg, in classical times, which is to say ancient Rome), a fairly wide tire that fits on the same diameter rim as a racing sew-up. The practice of calling a tire 700x23C (for example) is just silly, especially when there’s a perfectly good ISO system for naming tires.
Oh, and you can get (very fast) recumbents that use 2 622mm wheels. These bikes are not for the vertically challenged!
Thanks, didn’t think about that, because Joe’s head isn’t THAT large! His halo measures a maximum of 20″ – and so would be fitting a ‘bent *g*
BTW: bicyle tires are one of the 3 things I think of in inches (computer-monitors and disks being the 2 other ones).
BTW2 looking at
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fahrradreifen#Reifen-_und_Felgengr.C3.B6.C3.9Fen
there are two totally different sizes, both numered “700″ … (depending whether ETRTO or French system).
If Joe’s head swells any more, he’s going to have to go to a 27X1¼ halo…. or maybe even a 29er.

An apt quote to use on India’s Independence Day!

This is why you ride recumbents – 12.8m commute, 32.5mph average speed. Yes, average speed.

No beard, no sandals, just comfort and performance, oh and some weather protection too.
There’s a bit of a difference between a ‘bent and a velomobile…
Yes, for only $10,000 we all could ride a velomobile at amazing speeds on flat ground. And then a hill comes…
True – no-one made a video like this about a mere recumbent

@mickey85, because they are both recumbents?
Awesome!
12.8m commute, 32.5mph average speed
I could maintain 32.5 mph average speed for 12.8 meters, too, at least with a head start and a decent tailwind anyway.
I get passed by dudes on bents quite often…I am no racer, but I have always looked up to them and as I grow older I know I will be a bent rider…heck, Lord willing a trike…(already have the beard and Sandals…)
Trikes are cool. I’d love to try one some day. I’ve got sandals, all right, but no beard, hate beards. I hope that won’t prevent me from riding a bent if I ever need to/want to
Not a dude, and don’t usually use sandals (BTW, Keen makes cycling sandals, and Shimano, too), but I have a dual 700c hiracer bent (Reynolds Weld Labs Ti-bone). I also have a dual 700c RWL Z-bone. Not all bents lack the 700c gene. BWAHHHHAAAHAAA!!
Would Yehuda have a 650b halo?
No beard, but Keen Arroyo sandals!
I ride a recumbent and I don’t have a beard.
I have a beard and I don’t ride a recumbent.
never have understood the mentality that puts off a recumbent until the DF has wrecked the body
DF?
Diamond frame. IOW, your standard, non-recumbent bicycle. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diamond_frame#Diamond)
Thank you. “Diamond frame” is clear enough, it was just that the two letters by themselves didn’t “ring a bell”.
For me its because I can’t do crits or road races on a recumbent. When I quit USAC racing and go UMCA, its bent all the way
FYI, images weren’t showing in RSS the past two days
Fixed!
Recumbent, no beard, SPD sandals (no socks) in the summer at least. Laid back cyclist for approx 20 years. Can’t help growing older (if only!) Less belly since coming back from cycle touring with a tent in Denmark. (A windy country – always against you .) Recumbent riders can’t practically carry a rucksack unless they wear it on their chest – some found it gave an aerodynamic advantage, so they took to taking one stuffed with bubble wrap on unfaired races – now against the rules. Could be why some recumbent riders have a beer belly – can’t be banned from racing with it….
One of the early things I learned about bicycle touring was *NOT* to carry a rucksack (backpacK) on my person while riding because that meant that I, the rider, was using some of my energy to hold myself upright and in position with the weight of the pack and its contents working against me. By mounting a rack and using panniers I was able to make the bike frame support the weight, not me. In addition, by putting the weight lower it effectively lowered the CoG a slight amount and made the bike more stable at speed.
Hence the trem “aero-belly”.
Let’s see Fizz try one out… That’d show Joe!
I do have a recumbent (an ancient LWB Linear with the l-o-n-g handlebar coming back from the front wheel). I also have a beard of sorts if I let the shaving go for a bit, and I don’t wear sandals since my feet look like they belong to a Hobbit and I don’t want to be responsbile for anything that might occur should the unsuspecting public have to view them. I have also noted that when I am riding my ‘bent that the general consensus among the younger crowd is that I am riding one cool bike, and even among the grown-ups there’s always a two or three who are dying to ask if they could give it a try — and if I’m not running late for anything or just out for a leisurely ride, I usually oblige.
We must stop becoming so fragmented among ourselves — roadies vs. MTBers, commuters vs. recreational riders; racers vs. tourists; fixies vs. geared bikes. If it’s got two wheels and is human-powered, it is a bicycle and the person on it is a bicycle rider; heck, I’ll even cut you some slack if you’re on a trike so long as it isn’t made of plastic and doesn’t say “Little Tykes” or “Big Wheel” on it. Let’s get our act together and start to become unified against those who would deprive us of our places to ride, whether it’s the paved road, the technical single-track, or the recreational bike paths on the old railroad rights-of-way. Save the “my bike is better than yours” discussions for the post-ride bull session.
@Bicycle Bill
Well said. Makes sense to me….
My main ‘bent (I have 2 at the moment) was made in 1983, I also shave my head in the spring and let my hair and beard grow come fall because having long hair and a beard under a full-face helmet is murder in a TX summer, but nice and warm in the winter. My second-best ‘bent I made for a car show back in 2004 and won my class (Human-Powered Vehicle). but it was made too nice to be a good ride, too heavy. The Campy Centaur gruppo shifts nice though. Not enough ratio range for a ‘bent with the 11-23 cassette, either. climbs good but runs out of gears on top with the ISO 451 drive wheel (20.19″ tall).
Ond neither bike is the one in my Gravatar picture. That’s Gigi, a bike I made in 2008, from a 2004 RANS Fusion Crank-forward frame and seat.
I have two recumbents.
One for racing, for long travels, and to go fast everywhere. It has a 559 rear wheel and a 406 front wheel. It’s really fast and confortable. ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/refletsdevert/5634238134/in/set-72157628349299809 )
The other for bad roads, potholes. It has a rear suspension and two 406 wheels, is more solid. ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/refletsdevert/7433433398/in/photostream ). What is funny is that this bike is not bad to use as a cyclocross bike
And I have a classic race bike
I like to use it sometimes ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/refletsdevert/7410421254/in/photostream )
