I suppose the more we interact with good-natured customers, the more we are drawn into their friendly world…

Staircase to upstairs at the Kickstand? What is going on, are they storing stuff in the roof space now? :-)

“Staircase to upstairs at the Kickstand?” I’m positive Yehuda is in the basement workshop area in the last four panels and that staircase leads to the one and only upstairs floor. Lotsa previous strips show the basement workshop but I’m going for my bike ride now and can’t find an example.

Thanks for the reminder – I forgot about the basement store. Like I forget a lot of things :-(

As you get older, three things start to go wrong. First one is your memory – errr – and I can’t remember the other two…

Love this – I’ve done that before! I think if you can work out the perfect combination of gratitude, cheer, haste and verbosity, you could charm your way out of most shops without paying. As Fred says, happens to the best of us… ;)

I don’t think Frank left without paying; it’s just that Yehuda couldn’t remember his name at first.
Although I’ll bet he could descibe Frank’s bike in perfect detail, right down to the tension of the spokes.

Ah, it appears I’ve completely missed the point of this strip. Fred’s comment makes more sense now – I thought Yehuda had been so keen to help out his customer he’d forgotted to charge him for the work done on his bike. Turns out he’d just forgotten his name. Now THAT happens to me much more often – I can see someone’s face, remember all the details of the bike they ride, and have no recollection of their name whatsoever!

When I can’t think of someone’s name, I call ‘em “Mate”

I turned 62 yesterday.  I’ve been doing this for years.  Meanwhile, my memory is almost perfect on what happened to me during the second grade.

I passed a woman cycling in the opposite direction the other day.
    She said “Good morning Brian”
I said “Hey-y-y! Good seeing you this morning.”
    She said “Gail Robertson!”

    Oh.
    Yeah. : /

And that’s why I could never be a salesman. I have a heck of a time remembering names.

I participate in two different club rides and the cast of characters seems to change from week to week making it even more difficult. Getting older is wonderful, isn’t it?

Well, there is one good side to poor memory.  Even if you keep meeting the same people, they’re always new people to you!

Not cycling related, but my favorite ‘forgotten name’ event happened to my daughter when she was about 5.  She had just joined our pool’s swim team, and a few weeks in she was heading to practice when she saw the head coach.  She immediately ran up to him and said “Hi coach Dan!” Not missing a beat, he bent down, and with a huge smile said “Hello, princess.  Ready to swim?”  She jumped in the pool with the biggest smile on her face, not knowing (or, probably, caring) that he had no recollection of her name.

Some years ago a good-old-boy fundraiser taught me his simple trick for remembering names. It works pretty well.

    1) When first introduced, look at the person in the eye and silently repeat the name three times.
    2) Say the person’s name out loud. “Good to meet you, Frank.”
    3) As soon as possible silently repeat the name a few more times.
    4) If possible, use the name out loud a few more times.

In practice, the trick takes less than sixty seconds.

With short-term memory loss, made worse by lifetime Dyslexia, no method helps. Names just don’t ‘stick’ :-(

Yeah, I will never forget a face but associating names with those faces can be hard unless I deal with that person regularly.

I am a school teacher. I have a REAL problem with names, which is “inconvenient” in my profession.  Alumni come back . .  I can rattle off a lot of info about some of them, but their name won’t click for me until at least 10 minutes after they leave. Maybe two days.  VERY frustrating at times.  It will even happen with colleagues and friends sometimes.   I don’t forget THEM, or who they are; I just forget what they are called.  Hasn’t happened with my wife or the kids though, although sometimes I look at one of my offspring and have to remember which name we gave that particular one!   I do well with useless Jeopardy Trivia though.  Weird.

A lifetime problem. Many times just because names aren’t important to me. I was bawled out by a crusty old English teacher in high school for not being able to remember the names of half my classmates. “Why is that important? 2 months from now, I’ll never see anyone in this class again.”.

Who’s Yehuda Moon?

Yehuda Moon works at the Kickstand Cyclery, lives on his bicycle and dreams of a day when everyone does likewise.

The comic strip is about two guys who run a bike shop and the challenges they face in the store and on the road. Yehuda‘s the utilitarian advocate; Joe‘s the go-fast pragmatist. Thistle Gin, a wrench and biking mom, rounds them out.
