Ha! This reminds me of a few training rides back in the day. One ride the hammer was down and I was at my limit, yet I had to eat. The banana was not really chewed just bit and swallowed. This was evident to me the next day.... Another ride I was out of food and close to bonking. Buddy Rick gave me an apple. I ate every bit, the core, the seeds, the little fuzzy bit at the bottom.

Performance bars are such a scam. Fig bars in all their varieties will serve just as well.

Or if you're ever in central Iowa, check out the High Trestle Trail. 130-some feet above the Des Moines River valley.
http://www.mentalfloss.com/blogs/archives/131533
If you visit, remember to make a stop at the Flat Tire Lounge (right alongside the trail in Madrid) for food and liquid refreshments.

Definitely. I freelance as a tour manager on charity bike rides, like London - Paris, LEJOG, that sort of thing, and we always provide fresh fruit, nuts and water as an absolute minimum at rest stops. Spend four consecutive days cycling and living off energy gels and powder drinks and it has one of two effects on your digestive system, and neither is good. There's nothing you get from those that you can't get from a banana and a handful of peanuts.

Bananas - nature's Mars Bar. :)
