I need to find a route like that through my city; we’ve got a heat wave moving in tomorrow.

    Also, FIRST!

      Yay you! First! Woohoo!

Also, I’d love a heat wave. In London, we’ve got a rain wave. Summer seems to be on holiday.

A rain wave? Have you not been outside all week? Hot and sunny innit.

Fair point, on the morning I post, the weather turns out to be hot, humid and still somehow grey. But still, it’s not summer, is it?

    We’re having a heat wave,
    A tropical heat wave,
    The temperature’s rising,
    It isn’t surprising,
    She certainly can can-can.

I can identify. It was 102° going home yesterday. Supposed to be 104° today. And it’s only June. :-O

Great, I love “Vampire Style” riding. I think I’ll be doing it for the next 5 days

Easy solution: ride only at night.

I live in LA, where it’s usually hot. Highest temperature I’ve ridden in was 116F, peak temp during a hilly 60-miler that inlcuded the Velo Retro Rose Bowl ride. Really, I like it better when it’s cool!

Yesterday was hot when I rode out to Santa Monica. But the ride back, at night, was just wonderful! LA nights are beautiful near the coast, and it was cool enough, and the traffic clear enough, that I could hammer all the way home while barely sweating! Night riding is sweeeeet!

“Really, I like it better when it’s cool!”

Likewise.  One can always put on more clothes and layer up depending on the weather.  But there’s a definite limit to how much you can take off to keep cool/stay cool.  And for a lot of people, reaching that limit ain’t pretty.

Actually, in Bicycle Dreams, Dr. Breedlove has lightweight white clothing on, like an arab, and said it kept him about 20F cooler.  Needs to be wicking, like wool (Clarence Pickard http://ragbrai.com/2009/05/04/remembering-clarence-pickard/ ) or wicking technical clothing.

I’ve actually ridden with Dr. Breedlove … at least as much as being one of about 15K riders sharing the same road with him (on RAGBRAI) can be considered “riding with him”.
          RIP, Dr. Bob.

He could wear one of those capes for a more complete vampire look. Say, has anyone ever heard of a vampire ride? Like a tweed ride only with vampire outfits?  Hmmm… Getting ideas now. It would have to be a night ride of course.

Who’s Yehuda Moon?

Yehuda Moon works at the Kickstand Cyclery, lives on his bicycle and dreams of a day when everyone does likewise.

The comic strip is about two guys who run a bike shop and the challenges they face in the store and on the road. Yehuda‘s the utilitarian advocate; Joe‘s the go-fast pragmatist. Thistle Gin, a wrench and biking mom, rounds them out.
