Because if it rhymes, it's called a rhyme. Rhymes are a subset of poems as bikes are a subset of vehicles.

My wife is like that - she strongly prefers to haul her bike out of town and ride up the rail trail. Often I will ride from home and meet her further out where she is more comfortable riding. It is not that she lacks the riding skills: in bits and pieces over recent years we have toured much of the Pacific coast from north of Vancouver, BC to the Mexican border. We plan to fill the last gap this summer, riding from Oregon to Sacramento. She simply is uncomfortable with traffic around and will avoid it at the cost of burning gasoline when the option is available.

I am uncomfortable driving to the ride and tend to make the opposite choice. Don't know that this one is easily resolved. Yes, we will be buying a new minivan to support hub and spoke touring in retirement.

I've driven over an hour one-way for a 45 minute ride. That's just how it goes for CX racing some days.

This strip illustrates one of the two reasons I rarely ride on actual MTB trails any longer. I dislike driving to trail heads.

The other is the crash I sustained a traumatic eye injury form.

guess I would have never gotten married if my husband acted like Yehuda. I didn't have a decent bicycle before I met him. My husband was and still is kind and generous. He was more then willing to drive to the bike path with me while we were dating and do a 20 mile round trip. Little by little we went farther and farther and farther together. Better to be a sweet guy then a self righteous jerk.

For most of my working life here in Winslow I rode a motorcycle to my many out-of-town meetings. My bride and I were also active in the "local" chapter of CMA. We used to have a bumper sticker that said "I rode my motorcycle to Trailer Week" to mock all those "bikers" who towed their bikes everywhere so they could ride up and down the boulevard.

When we lived in Sandy Eggo I rode my bike or my skateboard to work, 10 miles one way, for most of my career. I loved sailing past the stalled traffic on my skateboard! I even won the 1st "Alternate Transportation" day grand prize - which was ironic since most everybody else was doing it for the one day, while I rode my same old skateboard just like most days.

In Winslow, it is hard to experience the same smugness when I've never had to wait longer than a few seconds for "traffic" to let me continue. In over 20 years, I've only had to wait for more than 6 cars to go by one time.

We don't live in a concrete jungle, but it is a 32 mile ride on the highway to the nearest town and 60 miles in the other direction to the metropolis of Flagstaff. There are basically 1/2 a dozen rides we can take in town, including riding up and down all of the east-west streets on one side of Berry/Park. We cover these rides a lot and enjoy the familiarity as well as the opportunity to occasionally test ourselves on a well-known course.

However...

Sometimes we'd like to see some different scenery. We try to include trips to other cities for other reasons with different rides, e.g. trips to Home Depot or Lowe's (90 miles away), doctor visits, or back-to-school shopping for the grandchildren. But sometimes we just need the change of scenery and want to enjoy the pine forest or the miles of urban trails. Then we pack up the bikes, head to Flag and indulge in this guilty pleasure. We usually include a trip to Mike & Rhonda's (The Place) for a gourmand meal. The prices are modest, the food is basic, tasty, and the portions are, to remain understated, generous.

When we want to go MTBing, we have only a few options here, the best of which have been barb-wired off recently. Flagstaff, otoh, has a plethora of great MTB trails, many thanks to Absolute Bikes! We make more bike-specific trips for the MTB rides than for road biking, but only in the late spring through early fall.

Sorry about the long post as well. Not generally disagreeing, just saying we all have different circumstances.

Rhyming is only one poetic technique among many. Old English poetry (and Old Norse, and early Germanic poetry in general) has no rhymes at all. It's all done with meter and alliteration.
