Speaking of bad weather, can anyone recommend a good raincape that won't make my wallet cry? I've seen some that range in price from $20 to $200+. The cheaper ones look, well... cheap, but I can't tell if the expensive ones work better or if I would be paying for a brand name.

Eternity is a long time! Roughly the same amount of time it takes to ride from Saskatoon to Regina against a 60 km/h headwind! :-). The Japanese would hold Birch Creek's bike in the highest regard http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wabi-sabi

I'm wishing that I bought that new raincape for Christmas! I must say though, that rain from above is one thing, but muck from below is another entirely! Thank goodness I have permanent mudguards!

I agree that there is such a thing as bad clothing. Rain gear is bad clothing, and the weather that requires its use is even worse. If I have to wear special clothing for riding (something other than my normal everyday clothing) then I don't enjoy the ride.

Actually, rain is only bad when I'm on my bike. I love rain and thunderstorms (the more violent, the better) when I'm indoors, or driving, or walking with an umbrella, but I don't need to wear a raincoat in those circumstances.

Oooh, I'd like to see some of your modifications. I'm not sure what coroplast is, our campaign signs in the north country are rigid corrogated plastic slabs, which could be, in fact coroplast, but I'm not clear on how they could be useful on a bike. I am always getting chuckles for attaching devices to my workhorse bike like the Fred that I am. As far as winter clothing, I don't find most of it useful. I put out enough heat on my daily ride to never have to wear insulated jackets, though I do have a good pair of Lake winter cycling boots and heavy Cannondale insulated tights. Waterproof gear never breathes enough when you are pumping out calories, so I end up soaked in sweat, which I like less than being soaked in clean rain. I do use neoprene face masks and waterproof mittens, and below zero° F, ski goggles.
Anyway, do you have any photos of the coroplast fairings?

+1 on the "only bad choices in clothing" bit. The problem is I live in N TX where winter comes in 2 or 3 day bursts, like a trained soldier with a machine gun, and never long enough for stores to put out real winter clothing. We get clothes that look like winter clothing, but don't actually keep you warm (unless you buy online). I'm really looking forward to then election season here, and recycling all the coroplast campaign signs. What does that have to do with warm clothing? you might say. Well coroplast can make for some dandy bar-end fairings that keep the wind off hands, not to mention lightweight fenders for road or MTB. You just need some coathanger wire to make the stays.

And yes I do some weird thing to my bikes in the name of making them more useful

Weather is just weather. It is neither good or bad, but there is only bad clothing. I go out on my bike in all weathers, and I enjoy every ride, because I wear the necessary clothing.

As far as I'm concerned, if the weather forces me to choose between staying inside or wearing stuff I don't want to wear, then THAT's bad weather.
