Here in Alabama there are new leaves budding everywhere, the bushes outside my window are covered in pink blossoms, and the Bradford pear trees have been covered in white blossoms for several weeks.

Same here in the Pacific Northwest (southwestern-most point in Canada.) Even the magnolias on campus are breaking out of their buds. Forsythia in full effect, Japanese plum & cherry trees all over town… it’s one of the most beautiful times of the year!

Temperatures in the low 80s F yesterday and today, had to kick on the AC to deal with the humidity. We might get to turn off the AC tomorrow, then it will pretty much have to run everyday until November.

Like here in Coventry, UK – I remember an article on ‘QI’ about ‘What moves at 4″/Day?’ … the answer is ‘Spring’ that travels North in the UK at that rate. I suppose you could sit in a planted garden and actually WATCH it happen?

Spring did start around 4pm local time. In the end, it was Sunday afternoons he couldn’t cope with, and that terrible listlessness that starts to set in at about 2:55 when you know you’ve taken all the baths you can usefully take that day, that however hard you stare at any given paragraph in the newspaper you will never actually read it, or use the revolutionary new pruning technique it describes, and that as you stare at the clock the hands will move relentlessly on to four o’clock, and you will enter the Long Dark Teatime of the Soul.

That reminds me of a trip on a m/c, my friend on his (smaller) 350cc Yamaha was riding at 70mph and was a steady 30 degrees or so from vertical. When he approached a bridge I expected the worst but he noticed too and went over to the hard shoulder, returning to lane 2 under the bridge! He was/is a good rider and didn’t lose control. On my 1000cc Gold Wing I had no problems…

Looks like Yehuda is suffering form DST-itis!

It was dark every morning but getting lighter, just about took my lights off (at least my velcro’d on helmet light, looks a bit redneck.)
Oh yeah, then we had to jump our clocks ahead… DARK AGAIN!!!  At least the next time my morning commute gets light they can’t take it away again until it goes away naturally.

DST — It may not save all that much energy or cut down on total traffic accidents, but I like the extra hour in the evening for outside chores in my yard.

Spring was here, too, in Pittsburgh, but today it started to get cold again and tomorrow it’s supposed to snow.
The roads have suffered badly over the winter, especially since road maintenance budgets have been cut. A couple days ago I was looking at a photo in the NYTimes of a rebel in Libya pointing his AK-47 at a suspected Qaddafi supporter on a highway. The Qaddafi supporter had his hands up and other people were trying to get the rebel not to shoot him. My first thought was, wow, look at all that smooth asphalt! Man, would I rather be biking there (in some ways).

Here in Oklahoma, with spring comes the inevitable tornado, and months of not knowing whether or not it is going to rain, and by not knowing, I mean not being sure if it is going to be sunny, cloudy, misty, rainy, or tornadic until whatever hits actually hits. Best time of the year!

It’s been a particularly long snowy Winter and cold lead-up to Spring here in the White Mtn foothills (well, compared to last year but no when compared to when I was a kid, when we had to walk to school through a foot of snow…uphill both ways…) But we had two beautiful days in the 50′s (degrees farenheit, not the era) and then 5″ of heavy slushy white stuff and more expected tomorrow…ugh.  We can’t plow our driveway, the ground is too soft…the town road we live on is also dirt and they did plow…plow guy got stuck in the mud…now there’s a picture!  Hopefully, the real Spring will show herself soon!

Time for the commute home, and it’s now 73 degrees F. Tomorrow an expected high of 40. I’d better get the Under Armour back out of the laundry.

Sunshine! And temps in the low 50s! But there’s a cold wind blowing (cue Arcade Fire) in my valley today. I’m back home, chilled to the bone, but today, I rode and admired spring bustin’ out all over the bloomin’ place. :) I saw it! It was here!

Thanks so much. I have to rest several days in advance to have a day like today, and then I have to rest for a few days afterward. The secret is to be grateful for when I *can* be active. And I am very, very grateful for days like today. :)

I rode out to visit friends this afternoon and it was beautiful.  In addition to the shrubs and pear trees in bloom that I metioned this morning, I saw lots of white dogwood blossoms and lovely purple crape myrtle; and the air was full of the scent of honeysuckle and jasmine.  The temperature was 79 °F today, but it’s supposed to get back down to 39 °F tomorrow evening.

79 degrees is my *perfect* temperature. Not too hot, not too cool. Perfect. That’s pretty much a summer day here where I live. :)

Jealous of the areas with actual spring weather. We’ve had a hint last week but it’s currently snowing and I just heard the weatherman say that temperatures should get above freezing in a couple more days. Now to melt the 3 – 5 ft snowbanks and we’ll be set.

Wow! You must have been thinking about Seattle today Rick. The first day it hit 55 degrees since November 4th of last year. Like November 4th it was not just over 55 but over 60 too! After clouds and rain almost every day for the past few weeks it felt soooo good.

A friend messaged me and asked if I’d like to take a walk in the dark since the wind stopped blowing…no bicycle, but we found a geocache on this lovely spring evening. Just feeling really grateful to be alive today…sorry if it comes across as a bit Pollyanna-esque. However comma…if you’re thankful for something, thank the capital S Someonething of your choice by speaking that energy of gratitude into creation. Om shanti.

Yehuda Moon works at the Kickstand Cyclery, lives on his bicycle and dreams of a day when everyone does likewise.
