Shared Lane Markings (aka sharrows) are supposed to do more than remind drivers to share the road.....in fact, the MUTCD guidelines mention NOTHING about them being a reminder. The first thing on the list of purposes says that they're to assist cyclists with lateral positioning in the lane. Read the full thing here:

http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/htm/2009/part9/part9c.htm

So they're actually more for the cyclists than for the drivers.

Wow. That's insane. How about, get a sturdy bike with quality parts, so you don't have to mess with that crap all the time? I really love it that these OCD crazies are the face of American cycling. One of the joys of giant fat tires is that I need to check the pressure maybe once per month, if that, and the kevlar belts mean that the rubber can get terrifically cut before I have problems.

Understand, I do check the things that wear out (like the chain), but after realizing that the rear cog was gone (new chain skipped under load) I simply reinstalled the old chain, ordered a new sprocket to set aside with the chain (oops, should have ordered a new chainring, too), and plan to ride it to pieces through the winter. If I'm really worried about it failing on the road, I'll just carry the spare parts around for a while; it is a cargo bike, after all.

Missing the forest for the trees, as usual. What's Copenhagen's ride share? What's their overall safety rate? Both ways, they kick our ass. How did they get there? Not with "effective cycling". Ditto for the Netherlands, ditto for Germany. We are, at best, pursuing a local safety maximum, where the skinny-tired fast-riding nerds try to make the roads safe for themselves (and for many many years, I resembled that remark).

And, of course, bicycle crashes is AGAIN missing the forest for the trees. Better to get the exercise, with a minor crash risk (that might or might not exactly minimal) than to be perfectly safe and not get the exercise at all (lack of exercise is really deadly, over time). The Vehicular Cyclists have been preaching their gospel since I was a kid. Ride share has scarcely budged in decades, and to the extent that it has, I think is largely due to pretty infrastructure that to my vehicular-cycling-trained-eye, is not "safe". I did this stuff for years, but sooner or later you notice that it does not work for the larger population.

I wish, also, to point out that the focus is utterly wrong. If you look at all the attention that has to be paid, and the things you have to learn to watch for, to be a vehicular cyclist, don't you think it would be nicer if we had more "vehicular drivers"?

Howard Abts, LCI clearly was expressing how "<span>motorists will interpret it" and not his own opinion.

They give Yehuda plenty of respect - respect for his more outlandish ideas means simply ignoring them, not getting a stick and beating sense into him. They are adults after all. Yehuda just has a more juvenile way of doing things and his friends know that and make allowances, instead of getting all military on him!

We are not sure of Yehuda, but SS seems to have been adopted by the Shakers. If Yehuda was, also, maybe they see themselves as family and isn't it a sort of family law for siblings to tease / torment each other? ;-)

The allowed/prohibited thing is what the Police need to sort out. There is no consensus between Police regions, or even Police<strong>men</strong>, it seems from the comments here!

Mongo, I know it's a cartoon. Does that mean I'm not allowed to think about it? I generally enjoy the comic, I just don't get the dynamic between the characters.
