jebus--i was gone for a few days [cycling in the mountains], and have some serious comment reading to do. well, not terribly serious, but lots of them. so to begin, my terribly expensive specialized mountain bike, a full-suspension s4 or s5 or whatever, has a seat post like that, and did i mention that it wasn't cheap?
and it's quite kind to my back.

BSO = Bike Shaped object
BHO = BSO, w/typo

I have seen a few SUVs or Xovers hauling MTBs on racks. Some folks may like to drive out to where they can ride on some trails.

BTW, a momma in a big honkin' SUV almost made a right on red just as my brother's Volvo was going through an intersection this morning. It's not just bikes at risk from the idiots behind the wheels of some of those.

SUV's or 4X4's were made popular by very a portion of the American population because they are way too fat to fit in a normal sized car. Simple....! ;-)

All else aside, they *do* suck to work on.

The thing I like about SUVs and 4 wheel drive variants thereof, is watching someone buy one as if they are actually going to go off road with it - ever. There's a guy at work that has a Cadillac Escalade all tricked out with fog lights, big brush cutter bumper, the whole "I can tame mountains" look. And he goes into hysterics if a bird dropping lands on it. He is **never** going to take that thing thru some scratchy bushes or muddy swamp. I'm betting he has a nice bike rusting quietly in his garage, next to the treadmill/stairclimber/Bowflex he doesn't use either.

I rode a good mountain bike when I started commuting through the winter, but couldn't stand watching the effect of salt, and couldn't keep up with the hassle of keeping cables moving freely. I picked up a 1980 Huffy, brush painted purple, with no speeds (literally, no speed) and coaster brakes. It gets me to work and back. Some rides are beautiful. Some rides are challenging. They are all easy on my budget and easy on the environment. Maybe I make people feel good because they have a nicer bike than I do. But, I look forward to spring and the re-emerging of my road bike and recumbent.

SUV's are slower to get up to speed. Have to begin slowing earlier than other vehicles and have to slow down more to turn corners. They might be safe in an accident, but they are definately more likely to get in to an accident in the first place. Poor mileage, terrible ride, maintenance nightmares, limited interior space and ugly design are just icing on the fool's cake. You can rent a real towing or hauling vehicle for the rare time you need same and for less than a month's payment on an SUV. There is nothing an SUV does that can't better be performed by a mini-van (some w/4cyl's now), a pick-up truck or a practical family car. I don't put my self worth in to the vehicle I drive. Perhaps that's why I prefer my bike. As for Wal-Mart bikes, an astute rider can buy a great commuter bike from any box store with less than a hundred dollars in modifications (assuming you can't do any work your self). Too many boutique bikes today are just the latest, greatest thing that really doesn't work well at all (like carbon fiber that begins to disintegrate from too much sun light).
