Yehuda Moon works at the Kickstand Cyclery, lives on his bicycle and dreams of a day when everyone does likewise.
The comic strip is about two guys who run a bike shop and the challenges they face in the store and on the road. Yehuda‘s the utilitarian advocate; Joe‘s the go-fast pragmatist. Thistle Gin, a wrench and biking mom, rounds them out.

Can anyone tell me about the leaflet that Yehuda reads. I have tried to find it or anything about it but don’t seem to get much.
BLUE CAR with damaged front quarter panel!!!!!!!!
Victor, the magazine is a take-off on the Rivendell Reader, published by Rivendell Bike Works.
@victor- As sanitycheck says, the Lauterbrunnental Leaflet is a takeoff of the Rivendell Reader, a semi-quarterly which is mostly written by Grant Petersen of Rivendell Bike Works, http://www.rivbike.com
I didn’t “get” it either until I went Googling for Lauterbrunnental. About the first thing I found was that JRR Tolkien visited the Lauterbrunnental valley in Switzerland at the age of 19 in 1911 and much later used the topography as the model for Rivendell in his Lord of the Rings saga. “Ah” I said, feeling like a cartoon lightbulb had just come on above my head. I wonder how long it took Rick to dream that one up?
@okiegonian- Good observation! I didn’t notice the damaged blue car so thank you. There must be a resolution on the horizon, if Yehuda would only keep his eyes open.
Peter –
Wow.
Rick’s joke goes way deeper than I’d realized. Impressive piece of detective work!
Damaged Blue car!!
I wonder if the Rivendell Reader will start running Yehuda Moon cartoons, and if so, how that will be reflected in the cartoons.
Note it is a BLUE SUV. Even more of a statement.
A year after mowing down Fred, and the driver hasn’t fixed his precious Stupifying Ugly Vehicle?
@Peter In the next hard-print (Summer 2008->Dec 2008?) , that explanation deserves pride of place in a foreword!
A friend (and colleague) and I worked the LL out one day in late January… I’m forgetting who decided to do the Tolkien history, but when it hit us, we knew we had to use it.
@ Wogster
Nope: can’t afford to fix it because of the crippling cost of fuelling the beast.
previous cyclists make it possible for future riders to ride with no incident?
car = suv D:
@ Thanks to all for pointing out the leaflet and also the car I hadn’t noticed until I read the comments… Wow I hope Fred gets some rest soon.
But if the Fred story is ever really resolved, what could Rick possibly do for a followup?
Oh crap! I didn’t even notice the dent! Wow…..
Wondering if the SUV here is the same as the one Thistle confronts in the 71108 strip (“You know this how?”) Colors look similar – and you can’t see the front of the SUV in the earlier strip (though the front right corner *does* look a little bent . . .)
The SUV which Thistle confronts is gray isn’t it?
