Brakeless, yes, is the "tradtional" way to ride a fixed gear, but if you're not in a velodrome, be smart and a put a brake on. You're gonna get laughed at just as much when you plow into the side of a car as your hipster buddies will when you have a brake... and you might want to start looking for new friends. @RichardT
