Gilbert,
Talk to Todd, at Clever Cycles. He sells and is a big fan of both xtracycles and Bakfietsen, and could provide some answers.

Regarding Bakfiets vs. Xtracycle, I think it really depends. Both definitely have their strengths. The bakfiets is a very complete well thought through family bicycle, no doubt about it.

On the other hand, the xtracycle also has its strengths. If you live where there's some serious terrain, the weight difference , 55lbs and disc brakes can be a big plus in the direction of the xtracycle.

My wife (Nickie from a couple comments above) and I were within inches of buying a bakfiets, but in the end decided that with as much mountain riding as we do with our kids and the fantastic winter tire selection (we live car free in CO) that a Big Dummy, Surly's xtracycle purpose built frame, being 50 lbs lighter than a bakfiets with disc brakes, made a lot more sense for us.

If we didn't do mountain rides with our kids and didn't have months of snow and ice to contend with it would be a no-brainer for the bakfiets for us.

I would go for the bakfiets - that way you can have more contact with your kids while riding rather than them just looking up and staring at your butt!

I have a Rans V II 26HD with Xtracycle, and it barely slows me down when riding. A peapod child seat for 20-55 pound children will do great, as long as you only need to carry one child at a time. http://xtracycle.com/peapod-bike-seat-that-grows-with-your-child-p-73.html

thats not an easy question Gilbert, they are quite different and nobody on a comic forum can give you a straight answer.
The Xtracycle is similar to a bicycle in many ways where the cargobike can be a 3-wheeler and much heavier. You must mitigate comfort, weight, cargo capacity, speed, versatility (no bafkiets on the sidewalk, then again, no bikes on the sidewalk at all in a perfect world)
My only $0.02 is that I would persoanlly find an Xtracycle more fun to ride on a daily basis, for me, its just something amazing about riding a bicycle, and a cargobike is often a tricycle.

I'm thinking car replacement with a toddler: Bakfiets or Xtracycle? (It's 4 miles to town on flat country roads.)

wow! I love seeing so many people getting into bikes! Did you see all the people in the shop behind Joe?

I'm glad the Shakers are helping. 1) They're cool. 2) They seem like they would do a good job fixing bikes.

Oh yay! Cargo bikes and Bakfiets! Maybe a mom will start riding?
