I was chased by hefty rotweiller once when I happened to ride past it and the 'owner' as they were taking a walk along a riverside bike path. The thing took off after me and totally ignored the owner's commands to stop. Pretty soon his yells faded into the distance and there was just the sound of heavy breathing and the rhythmic clicking of claws on the ground as the thing galloped after me. This went on for about half a mile and I was beginnign to feel uncomfortable with the pace... so I monentarily upped it, and -- just as in a race -- it worked and I gapped the mutt, who lost interest and eased off. It felt good, maybe that was how Lance felt dropping Ulrich on Alpe d'Huez.

From experience the water squirt technique is better for farm dogs that consider the passing roadway a part of their territory.

What surprises me is how much energy is available when we have suitable motivation. I suspect Joe will remember this personal best for years.

Thanks, Chris. I hadn't tried the water bottle thing; I usually just stop, do an assertive face-off & tell it to go home. I'm a dog-lover, so it usually works, but I bet the water bottle thing is faster & more fun.

When a dog comes running after you and catches up get your water bottle and squirt it on the nose/face. It will stop and turn around. Tried & true.
