		<description>Dr. Rad nails it. Yep, I think it&#039;s mostly a CYA for the local authorities. My little village has stop signs for the railroad tracks. The railroad tracks which have 1 or at most 2 trains/day, up &amp; down which you can see for a mile in each direction. Bikes, cars, walkers, everything is supposed to stop for the train that isn&#039;t there. Grrr.</description>

They&#039;re usually there to say &#039;if you disobey this sign and then have an accident, the local authority is not liable&#039;. I&#039;ve seen them on footbridges with railings high enough for pedestrians, but which you could conceivably go over if you lost control of your bike and went over the handlebars.</description>
