In either case if you have to squint so does everyone else heading in your direction. Keep that in mind. A bike is just a thin shadow at best in those situations. I never ride into a low sun for that reason.

I always keep my light because I tend to forget light it in the dark ;-)
Since we have hub dynamos and LED lights, I can see no reason why turn it of.

As you say, Fencer, in the UK too. In both places there are particular rules for each that may not apply to the other. eg: 'riding on the sidewalk/pavement' - in neither case is it allowed by law unless signs say otherwise. Cars regularly park on the sidewalk, albeit with only one side, but this is not supposed to happen. Bylaws in the UK are printed on notices all over town about not parking on the grass/verge etc but nobody heeds them - including the police....

Good thoughts, Vantastique! I was talking about perceptions in the public, not fact so much as assumption. People do not think bikes have rules, even those who use them, generally, unless like us they're nutty advocate types who look this stuff up. Giving bike driving lessons as a required class in middle school might help. Unfortunately it's likely to be taught by moms and teachers and focus on helmet wearing and device operation with little more traffic advice than "and stay off the roads, it's not safe."

Here in Vancouver, when a bus signals to change lanes from picking up passengers back into the driving lane, everyone must yield to it. It makes a huge difference in how long it takes a bus to do its route.

of course funny stuff happens when you do have a flag and they still argue that you need one ...

I also wonder why truckers don't demand 'safety' flags for cars.
The difference in height is about the same as that between a bike and a low racer.
And then there are the 'low' sports cars such as the Lotus Elise.
