Yehuda Moon works at the Kickstand Cyclery, lives on his bicycle and dreams of a day when everyone does likewise.
The comic strip is about two guys who run a bike shop and the challenges they face in the store and on the road. Yehuda‘s the utilitarian advocate; Joe‘s the go-fast pragmatist. Thistle Gin, a wrench and biking mom, rounds them out.

Timing is everything!
LOL@The “Woop-Woop” b/c all i can think of is Officer Winslow in Police Academy.
I got a good laugh at this strip!
Nice one Rick – It is good to see your sense of humor is still strong!
I love the flat hair, literally, in the last frame showing how wet he got!
hahah I want one of those ‘helmets’ ! actually I used to have a winter helmet with less vent holes, but it got old and icky so I ditched it, and now I just have my well ventilated helmet all the time. Feeling the rain drops make it through your helmet isnt a very pleasant feeling!
Helmet covers are your friend! I have used a black reflective semi-permeable one for several years without ever taking it off. Keeps the worst of the rain off (and I commute in all weather in Seattle)
A la Sheldon Brown, I tape my helmet’s forward vents closed when the temp passes -15 C.
Winter helmets are cheap and plentiful. Get a new skater’s helmet ($10 online), or find a good snowboarder helmet at a ski swap or yard sale. If I’m caught in a heavy downpour in the non-winter season I always carry a plastic shower cap, the kind hotels give you and you never use.
I was doing a tour from Pittsburgh to Washington DC and one day it poured. I found a motel, asked them for one of those cheapo complementary shower caps that they put in the rooms and I was off. If fit perfectly over the helmet and it stuffs neatly. Still have it. It’s great!
Oh.. This is going to get good
Oh yea!
So what’ll yehuda do with the fine? Not pay, of course, so will we see a court proceeding?
between his rain cape and his “helmet” he should be airborne by now. With a tailwind he can sail along like a catamaran.
Sorry about the site being down all morning. Our hosting company can’t see to be able to handle the new website. Hopefully this will be resolved shortly. Otherwise we’ll need to move the website to another company.
I didn’t notice Rick – of course being in the UK makes a difference eh?
I was rather slow getting online this morning but still posted at 2:19 am it seems. Great stuff this day/night thing…
I see that posted at 2:02 pm – 19:02 over here
No problem Rick, getting my Yehuda fix at night is just as good as getting it first thing in the morning!
I always wonder what makes a cop decide the best use of his time is to hassle a helmet-free grown-up cyclist. I’ve been stopped a couple times. No fine yet.
I once saw an academic in Oxford, UK, riding one-handed in his gown in the rain. The other hand was holding an umbrella! I was amazed he stayed on the bike, what with all the things to catch in the wind (or in the spokes for that matter).
These academics – they seem to know how to manage the science of balance just right. Whatever next?
my mother often does that. she refuses to use the handbrake anyway, so she can’t see a reason why not :-/ and in fact, she is not alone here.
Oh, I see that often in NYC.
We just use, Shower Caps from the “Dollar Store”, works great, very cheap and any color you want!
Worth the wait! lol
I hope he’s got his raincoat for additional protection….
bottom line – he still needs a helmet
No he doesn’t. They were unnecessary 50 years ago, and nothing’s happened to change that.
There is no logical argument for requiring cyclists to wear helmets but not pedestrians.
Being a cop can be a thankless task – trying to enforce the law with people who don’t want it enforced, and probably under pressure to make the crime clear-up figures look good, so feeling obliged to go for the easy hits. And when the legislation is somewhat iffy, it’s a bit like being piggy in the middle; never a good place to be.
Don’t know about the USA, but in the UK I’m impressed by how forbearing police officers can be. They keep their cool and politeness when likely I would be slapping someone’s face – or worse.
