that’s simple point out that she is old and because of her terrible vision she will no longer be a legal driver when she next has to take her license renewal test after which time he will sell her a 3 wheel cargo bike….convert
I’m not sure the last part of that proposal is even legal, under Ohio state law. There’s one about city statutes for bicycles have to be consistent with the uniform rules of the road, and says that they can’t ban bikes from public roads.
Registration generally costs more to run than it generates. I’ve talked about helmet laws before, but numbers I’ve seen from them show that they make things more dangerous for the cyclist they don’t completely discourage. Not to mention, that motor vehicle occupants have a far higher statistical chance of serious head injury. If MHL promoters are so serious about safety, they would try to pass driving helmet laws. But, such people rarely do the research.
I’m waiting on her trot out the Thompson Rivara study. As I understand, that was debunked back in the 90s, but people still try to use it to justify helmet laws.
Maybe some “helpful” person like Yehuda could suggest other ideas to include in the proposal, like banning “turbocharged derailleurs?” Sort of like the clueless legislator I read about a few years back who wanted to ban “high-velocity magazines” and was surprised when her pro-gun colleagues enthusiastically backed her proposal. (Unfortunately someone tipped her off before she could bring it to a vote and make an even bigger fool of herself.)
Ms. States’ limitations doesn’t make the roads safer, because it generates more motorized traffic, that is more dangerous for Yehuda and friends or pedestrians. Safety in numbers shows the right way, get more people riding bicycles.
My proposal to make roads safer is, to mount obligatory a 10” spike at the steering wheel hub and to forbid airbags and saftey belts for drivers. I bet car speed declines.
So Rick, you are advising that instead of buying and reading the comics we go back to freely reading the strips online?
Maybe that is not what you intended but it might be construed as the advice…
Now there is me remembering what went before to help you raise income
This makes me sad, even just as a comic strip. Living in France, I always thought I’ll be safe from such non sens (no offense, but biking is really simplier here), but lately, some crazy legislation came up in a small town, south of France, where the brand new bike lane is limited to 10 km/h (about 6.2 mph, pretty much walking speed). There’s a road, a sidewalk, and a bike lane. But as the mayor said: “Bikes get in the way of cars (wich would be the worst crime ever, slowing down a car for even a sec), and pedestrians enjoy the bike lane because it’s nicer than the sidewalk”. So, to “prevent kids and old people from getting hurt by bikes”, he simply made a speed limitation, making the bike lane useless for commuters. Enjoy the logic. Spend thousands (millions? it’s a pretty long and bad ass bike lane along a used axis) in the construction of a safer, durable way to get around, than makes it worthless by making bikers responsible for every other users and punishes them with a ticket!!! So, rather than watching for maniacs on the road, police officers are looking for people biking at 11km/h… And yes, this is true… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVdO0DJt8pQ&feature=related
Crazy. If it’s temporary that’s one thing but they need to separate any two modes that are normally at different speeds.
The Seawall in Vancouver is shared in places but mostly separated somehow. The best spots are the places where the separation is very clear. The worst spots are the shared areas.
I just ignore those signs. We have them all around the lakes and various trailways here but as long as pedestrians aren’t on the path I feel comfortable doing 30k on them. If pedestrians are on the path I tend to slow down and give them a very stern ring from my bell.

What I want to know is what the heck is Yehuda doing at the shop instead of being at that city council meeting? From the past comics, he got a heads-up from the sympathetic city councilman that this was going down….
Special session, called on short notice?… although that would be illegal.
Or perhaps it’s just a preliminary committee meeting, such as a Highways and Properties Committee, that handles things like this and makes recommendations before it comes up for consideration before the entire council.
Or maybe she’s making a TV spot and the rest of the background is just window dressing….to make it look like she’s in a council meeting.
In any event, Yehuda, be afraid ….. be very afraid. Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.
Yehuda knows that his presence would be incendiary, perhaps leading to a knee-jerk passage of the whole enchilada. (apologies to mexican food everywhere)
Sadly, it only takes a few nut-balls to pass stuff like this. Until last summer, the best route from Kansas City west was closed to cyclists because a small group of city councilmen decided they didn’t like cyclists in their town.
I still say someone needs to give Nanny a bike and teach her to ride. Her attitude only comes from fear and jealousy, though she’d never admit it outright.
When bicycles are outlawed only outlaws will have bicycles…you can have my bicycle when you pry it from my cold dead hands…a bicycle society is a polite society…sorry, couldn’t help myself…
It would be better if car traffic was limited to off-peak hours, their drivers were made to wear helmets (and all the other stuff that is mandatory in race cars).
Let’s see how they feel about that …
God, what a wretched woman. How is Yehuda going to deal with her, I wonder?

By trying to push too much through in one go she risks losing the motion. We can certainly hope so.

As soon as I can get home, I’m going to look at my Yehuda Moon comic books.
Or you could browse though all of the comics right here!

Yehuda is not a meeting person. I think that the Councilman will be quietly sabotaging the proposal.
