Contraring your theory I never ever had my head touching the ground when I fell with the bike. Even not the two times I got hit by car (one left-hook, one right-hook).
Even as kid while trying the dumbest things I only scratched hands and knees.

Nobody really has any use for a helmet, until the one time they do. If I was commuting with a child in traffic, I'd make sure the kid wore a helmet. I don' see any point not to.

@ dondare - or congenital aniridia. Tyere's a hot-spot for it in East Anglia [UK], mostly descended from a Dutchman with the condition who came to bring Dutch drainage expertise to the draining of the fens in (I think) 15th / 16th century.

cyclists can kill people too.
You don't need a car.
Just a little momentum :

All I know is during the 120,000 miles I've logged 99.999999999% of the time I'VE HAD NO USE FOR A HELMET. Only wrecked three times and only two of those did I do -any- helmet damage. My wife's got 90K miles, a few more wrecks, and probably 99.9999995% of the time had no use for one either. But the two of those wrecks I'm convinced (as were the E.R. doctors) the crushed helmet saved her life (one was wind and the other a dog.
Of course -your- mileage may vary.

But there are a great many old, bold cyclists. 40 years ago everyone cycled and cycle helmets were unheard of.

In fact most pedestrian injuries do not involve motor vehicles (or bikes) but these do not count as road accidents. They come under "tripping and falling" injuries which altogether take a larger toll than road accidents.
Even just counting road accidents, more pedestrians die from head injuries than cyclists, simply because there are more pedestrians hit than cyclists and head injuries are more likely to kill than any other sort of injury.
There is no logical reason why cyclists have to helmet up but pedestrians don't.
